Warranty & Service

Insured delivery

Within Germany, your furniture is not delivered by an anonymous freight company but by our own drivers in our own truck – carefully packed and insured. In Berlin we carry it into your home; elsewhere in Germany we deliver to the curbside. If needed, the driver is happy to lend a hand. Deliveries to other European countries are handled by a freight company specialising in antiques, also insured.

Before delivery, we call you to arrange a 2-hour time window. Please provide your mobile number when ordering. Additional costs may apply for deliveries to islands.

Do you have a special delivery request? Feel free to contact us personally.

30-day return policy

You have a 30-day right of return: if you are not satisfied with your purchase, you can return the piece in unchanged condition within 30 days of receipt.

A short message is all it takes – on request, we will organise the return transport with our own drivers. We offset the transport costs against the refund, and you will promptly receive the remaining purchase price.

Stories

“You can see how much work went into restoring it. The armchair feels brand new, but it has retained the soul of its former self.”

Marina Gruz

I didn’t want an off-the-shelf piece of furniture, but something with a story. The armchair and the small table beside it turn an empty corner into the most beautiful spot in the apartment.

Eva-Maria Drewes

I didn’t want a plastic desk for my child. This one is 60 years old, and the chair with the green leather fits as though the two had always belonged together. The furniture will probably still be around for their children.

Mid-Century Furniture: Originals from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s

Mid-Century Modern is the style that never goes out of fashion: clean lines, warm teak, slender legs, furniture that feels light and lasts a lifetime. At Hauptstadt Möblerei, you will find one of the largest selections of mid-century furniture in Germany, with more than 200 pieces available at all times, from Danish teak sideboards to kidney-shaped tables and cocktail chairs from the 1950s to rosewood chests of drawers from the 1960s. All originals, restored in our workshop, with no reproductions.

What defines Mid-Century Modern

The term describes furniture design from around 1945 to 1975. After the war, designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Charles and Ray Eames, and in Germany Franz Ehrlich wanted furniture that was affordable, functional, and beautiful. The result: organic shapes, teak, rosewood, and walnut, tapered legs, sliding doors, no unnecessary ornamentation. Today, this furniture fits into both period buildings and new builds because it leaves space instead of filling it.

Mid-Century Furniture by Type

  • Mid-Century Sideboard: The centerpiece of every collection. Danish teak sideboards with sliding doors, German walnut credenzas, rosewood sideboards with brass handles. All available pieces under Sideboards.
  • Mid-Century Chest of Drawers: Narrow drawer chests, highboards with bar compartments, teak chests on metal legs. See Chests of Drawers.
  • Armchairs and Sofas: Cocktail chairs from the 1950s, Danish lounge chairs with teak frames, three-seaters with wool upholstery. See Armchairs and Sofas.
  • Tables: Kidney-shaped tables, extendable teak dining tables, coffee tables with tiled tops, desks with floating tops.
  • Chairs: Series-produced dining chairs, cantilever chairs with Vienna cane work, shell chairs. See Dining Chairs.
  • Display Cabinets and Shelving: Lightweight wall systems, bookcases, and display cabinets made of teak.

Danish Design, German Postwar Modernism, East German Design

Most of our mid-century furniture comes from Denmark (teak, rosewood, manufacturers such as Dyrlund or Sibast), from West Germany (walnut furniture from the 1950s and 1960s, manufacturers such as Lübke or WK) and from East Germany (Hellerau, Deutsche Werkstätten, designs by Franz Ehrlich). Scandinavian and Italian pieces are also included. We name the origin and manufacturer when documented.

Why choose originals over reproductions?

A 60-year-old teak sideboard has veneers that are rarely used today, and a construction that has stood the test of decades. Reproductions imitate the form, not the substance. Our originals are refurbished in Berlin: surfaces are oiled or refinished, and drawers are made to run smoothly. With photos from all sides, measurements, and an honest condition description.

Frequently asked questions about Mid-Century furniture

Which years count as Mid-Century?

In the narrower sense, 1945 to 1969; in the broader sense, through the mid-1970s. The typical teak furniture usually dates from 1955 to 1970.

How can I recognize authentic Mid-Century furniture?

By solid-wood edges, dovetail joints in the drawers, manufacturer stamps on the back, and a patina that extends evenly across the entire piece. We document these features for every piece of furniture.

How do I care for teak furniture?

Treat it with teak oil about once a year, keep it out of direct sunlight, and don't place wet glasses on it without coasters. Nothing more is needed.

Does Mid-Century work with other styles?

Yes, better than almost any other style. A teak sideboard next to a Baroque-mirror or a cocktail chair next to an Art Deco-chest of drawers: The clean lines give the other pieces room.
